AWE Talks: AR Glasses' Current Evolutionary State
AWE EU 2024

Welcome back to AWE Talks, our series that revisits the best of AWE’s conference sessions. After a short hiatus, we're back with a fresh batch of footage from AWE EU 2024. We'll have hours of content for this weekly series.

We continue the action this week with Snap's work to advance AR. Its fifth-generation Spectacles were one of the standout product releases of 2024. On the heels of their EU release, Snap's Daniel Wagner takes us behind the scenes.

See the summarized takeaways below, along with the full session video. Stay tuned for more video highlights each week and check out the full library of conference sessions on AWE’s YouTube Channel.

Key Takeaways & Analysis
– AR glasses continue to see ups and downs, as their formats diverge and evolve.
   – In 2024, HoloLens exited the market while Snap Spectacles and Meta Orion entered.
   – These advanced AR glasses occupy one track while non-display AI glasses also emerge.
– Zeroing in on Snap Spectacles, the device has been a success so far in quality/capability.
   – Highlights include a Snapdragon dual SoC for distributed processing, and a new OS.
   – Snap OS debuts with Spectacles Gen 5, giving them vertically-integrated advantages.
   – Meanwhile, a 46-degree vertical FOV enables more upright human/social interactions.
   – That last part is a design philosophy seen throughout Spectacles and true to Snap's DNA.
– Spectacles will also host and amplify some of Snap's broader AI initiatives.
   – For example, Lens Studio 5.0 includes GenAI Suite to streamline lens creator workflows.
   – Easy Lenses meanwhile shifts the lens creation to users to generate things on the fly.
– For more advanced AI integrations, Snap ML lets creators build their own ML models.
   – For example, training it to recognize basketball movement enables a score-keeping lens.
– This will only improve with underlying AI advancements and human creativity.
   – The latter is a function of the directions that creators take it.
   – Use case opportunities are further unlocked by Spectacles line-of-site orientation.
– Altogether, it's clear that we're at the beginning stages of exciting AI/AR convergence.
