Brookline Interactive Group (BIG) and its project, the Public VR Lab, are building an inclusive field for Community XR. Rooted in the rich tradition of public access television and community media, BIG expanded its mission to provide the public with access to emerging media tools, equipment, and training, creating XR Toolkits, content in the public interest, and train-the-trainer workshop curriculum for educators, media makers, storytellers, and youth.
As the first publicly-funded XR lab in the U.S., the Public VR Lab has trained arts, cultural, and media organizations internationally to operationalize community-inclusive XR and provide educational demos, trained hundreds to create their own immersive media content, hosted multiple hackathons and monthly dev jams, and provided low-cost classes and scholarships in XR.
In 2020, the Lab will launch a new XR storytelling installation and civic dialogue-focused curriculum on American immigration/migration, called Arrival VR, to festivals, museums, historical societies, and educational organizations.
