Augment Therapy makes physical therapy software that is both fun for kids and effective for clinicians. In large healthcare systems and academic institutions, there are often different departments utilizing similar VR, AR, and/or XR technology to perform specialized functions. As ideas, research, and use cases grow, the number of projects utilizing similar technology increases. This can lead to an array of hardware and software along with inconsistent deployments and support. This presentation will discuss the benefits of coordinating resources and stakeholders to identify systemic barriers and share solutions.
Dr. Paul Chapman demonstrates our novel XR patient leaflets for cleft lip, allowing parents to better understand and visualise their child's surgery. This is a collaboration between the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit, School of Simulation and Visualisation (SimVis), Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity, Cleft Care Scotland and West of Scotland Innovation Hub. The work is published in January’s issue of The Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal.

Immersive simulation technology in the AR/VR/XR realm has the potential to address this public health crisis by providing accessible, scalable, and empowering training tools for healthcare professionals. As we develop these solutions, immersive simulations should capture the physiological diversity of the human body, offer varied environments, cater to different roles within healthcare, and enable healthcare workers to share their unique experiences and extensive knowledge without the need for coding expertise. By leveraging the right immersive platform, we can help combat emotional exhaustion and incorporate social determinants of health into the future of simulation, better-preparing healthcare workers for the increasing demands of their profession while offering effective strategies to alleviate staffing shortages. Simulation is a critical mainstay of the initial training and maintenance of abilities across the spectrum of healthcare workers. Though healthcare simulation training has historically been dominated by physical manikin-based simulators supplemented by pen-and-paper tabletop scenarios, VR-based approaches have been rapidly adopted over the past few years.
This panel, consisting of healthcare simulation and training leaders from industry (Air Methods, SimX), academia (University of Pennsylvania, University of Nebraska), and government (US Air Force), will discuss their real-world experience in integrating VR-based simulation into their healthcare enterprises. Particular attention will be paid to lessons learned regarding the benefits and challenges of VR in medical training, best practices for both adopters and solution providers, and approaches for facilitating the collaborative generation of VR-based training scenarios in medicine.
