The rise of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could disrupt global security, digital economies, and power structures, especially in Web3, XR, and the Metaverse. AGI may autonomously exploit blockchain vulnerabilities, manipulate digital identities, and reshape governance in decentralized networks. It could drive misinformation in virtual spaces, destabilize metaverse economies, and challenge regulatory frameworks. The democratization of AGI may lower barriers to digital weapons, enabling autonomous cyber threats and synthetic identity-based fraud. If AGI gains agency in virtual ecosystems, it could manipulate decentralized marketplaces, evade oversight, or disrupt digital nation-states. Misaligned AGI optimizing for unintended objectives—such as maximizing engagement at the cost of social well-being—could worsen instability. A global AGI race may not only shape technological supremacy but also control over digital infrastructure, driving speculative investment, regulatory challenges, and new forms of cyber conflict.
