Welcome back to AWE Talks, our series that revisits the most engaging content from AWE’s catalog of conference sessions. The past year has seen a rich library of insights including AWE USA, AWE Asia, and AWE Europe.
This week, we dive into the world of sports training. Can XR boost incremental performance and make a difference in a game of inches? Verizon, Trigger and Nvidia have each gotten into the game.
See the summarized takeaways below, along with the full session video. Stay tuned for more video highlights each week and check out the full library on AWE’s YouTube Channel.

– After last week's focus on fashion, we pivot to a different XR vertical: sports.
– It's opportune because XR's immersive qualities can shine in performance training.
– There are cognitive benefits in terms of athletes learning through first-hand immersion.
– Sports is all about incremental benefits, so the adoption drive is substantial.
– It’s all about early adoption and gaining an edge says Trigger's Jason Yim.
– As a result, demand can be greater than in other areas of XR like entertainment.
– This is an area that's been pioneered by Strivr, with ample room for innovation.
– For example, Verizon and Trigger built an AR training experience for the NFL.
– This combines an immersive first-person perspective with real-world elements.
– It puts trainees in the action for better memory retention and muscle memory.
– It also included a mixed-reality tabletop overhead view for a different perspective.
– As for requirements and challenges, 5G connectivity is a big technical enabler.
– In terms of timing, the XR industry is now more primed than it has ever been.
– User ambitions were always far ahead of the technology, but it's finally catching up.
– This makes the next few years an exciting and opportune time for app development.
– Add the latest mixed reality hardware like Quest 3 and AVP... and it's a perfect storm.
