The increasing popularity of XR applications is driving the media industry to explore the creation and delivery of new immersive experiences. A volumetric video consists of a sequence of frames, where each frame is a static 3D representation of a real-world object or scene capture at a different point in time.
However, such contents can consume significant bandwidth. Compression of volumetric video is required to obtain data rates and files sizes that are economically viable in the industry. Standardization is required to ensure interoperability. The Visual Volumetric Video-based Coding (V3C) standard defines a generic mechanism for coding volumetric video and can be used by applications targeting different types of volumetric content, such as point clouds, immersive video with depth or transparency of visual volumetric frames.
The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) has specified two applications that utilize V3C: Video-based Point Cloud Compression (V-PCC), and MPEG Immersive Video (MIV). This presentation provides an overview of the generic concepts of these technologies associated with the MPEG V3C system part for an efficient volumetric video-based media streaming in applications such as telelearning and XR experiences.

Augmented reality applications hold immense potential to bring people to go outdoors and share experiences with each other. However, to create seamless mixed reality experiences, AR apps require our devices to display perception and comprehension of our environment. In this presentation, I focus on the technical approaches to provide AR apps with the ability to localize and identify other devices, which by extension enables players to enjoy multiplayer AR experiences in which they can interact with each other directly. Vizar Technologies proposes an image processing approach, in which light pulses are emitted in specific light signatures, to provide direct multiplayer AR in smartphones. Our approach is compared with other common approaches, including GNSS with gravimetric and geomagnetic sensors, facial recognition, and add-on devices. As outlook, a few examples of possible future multiplayer AR experiences are highlighted.

Today, virtual reality lets us immerse ourselves in vibrant digital spaces with a surprising sense of social presence—the feeling that you’re right there with someone else, no matter where in the world they happen to be. But technology that opens up new possibilities can also be used to cause harm, especially when your virtual identity is segregated from your real identity. In VR, we sometimes see abusive behaviors such as harassing, bullying, grooming, and racial or sexual discrimination.
How do we prevent bad behaviors and engender pro-social behaviors in VR? How do we encourage people to trust and respect each other when they remain anonymous? In this talk, I'll walk through how we can build trust systems in a virtual environment, how social norms of virtual social spaces compare and differ from real life, and what principles we should follow to ensure we are building for inclusivity and safety of all types of people.

While learning styles differ for each individual, experts agree that practical experience and hands-on learning is most effective for engagement and retention. Getting practical experience, however, can be easier said than done and it's even more challenging when trying to find safe and suitable training opportunities as a scalable solution for a large number of users.
Immersive learning, a method by which learning experiences are facilitated through the usage of simulated or artificial environments, provides a safe space to learn, experiment and grow.
At Resourceful Humans, immersive learning is taken to the next level with cinematic learning. Rather than merely create artificial environments, we re-create real leadership stories in virtual reality so participants can learn from the experience through engagement.
As part of a group training experience, participants will need to complete challenges on the immersive journey that test decision making skills, collaboration and communication within their team. Observers on the outside have a ‘god’s view’ of participants' experience and can offer real-time feedback and insights into the performance of individuals and crew.

VR is not an empathy machine, it’s a conversation engine.
When it comes to issues of race, VR is not about trying to fix a problem or relive trauma, it’s about creating a safe space for everyone to practise self-discovery and talking about challenging subjects with others.
“Let’s Talk About Race” is a series of three VR training modules on microaggressions, bias and privilege developed by George Brown College (Toronto, Canada) in collaboration with London-based soft skills VR provider Bodyswaps.
In this talk, GBC’s Project Leader Michael Avis is joined by Bodyswaps’ CEO Christophe Mallet to discuss what they’ve learned about educator/technologist collaboration, the do’s and don’ts of trying to scale VR deployment in large education institutions, and dig into some of the results they gathered from 2000+ learners.
