2021 has seen the launch of three important market studies focused on the XR Industry. In May, Ecorys and XRA released an update to an earlier examination of the EU XR marketplace and concludes that Europe’s long-standing VR research and manufacturing, highly-skilled workforce, strong creative industry, and cultural diversity put the continent at a clear competitive advantage to seize emerging opportunities and become an important player in the global XR industry. In July, the law firm Perkins Coie and XRA released the fifth annual XR Industry Insider Survey which found that among industry stakeholders that despite, or even due to the Covid 19 global pandemic, there is sustained optimism around immersive technologies and an expectation that while hurdles exist there will be increased investment in the sector. Finally, XRA will release its second annual survey of decision makers for enterprises across six different sectors and what their expectations are around the adoption and use of immersive technologies in their fields. Join our panel for a 360 degree view of the health and prospects of XR.

Should robots feel emotions? More importantly, would these emotions cause them to perform their tasks better? In humans, emotions have historically played a vital role in the way we survived and evolved as a species. Moreover, emotions are an indispensable part of what makes up the fabric of intelligence and critical functioning. No wonder it has been a long-held view amongst leading experts in Artificial Intelligence (Fig.1) that infusing robots and intelligent systems with emotions would greatly heighten their functioning capabilities in the role they were designed for and beyond.
"I don't personally believe we can design or build autonomous intelligent machines without them having emotions." Yann LeCun - Chief Ai Scientist at Facebook silver professor winner of the Turing award in 2019.
Affective computing, born in 1995, relies on big data to recognize, process, and simulate human emotions;however, it does not provide the machines with their own emotional response. In contrast, Emoshape aims to encode real-time emotions in AI using Emoshapeâs EPU (Emotion Processing Unit) through Emotion Synthesis. Instead of the bootstrap approach of Googleâs Deep Mind (1, 2), Emoshapeâs vision is to teach the machine to preserve biological life above mechanical life.
Through the combination of cloud learning and a novel microchip, Emoshapeâs patent-granted technology can be ported into any existing AI or robot. The EPU will synthesize an emotional state within the machine, enabling real-time language appraisal, emotion-based reasoning and emotional personality development. This will make possible intelligent machines capable of understanding how words are associated with feelings, and able to respond with the natural empathy of a human. This response will also be reflected in their vocal responses and visual expression, which play an important role in audiovisual speech communication, increasing comprehension and creating a soothing environment or a trust/loyalty connection with wide applications in the entertainment, education, healthcare, or industrial sectors. Moreover, emotion also improves body-consciousness based on situation, particularly relevant to real-world autonomous intelligent machines, whether it is robots, metaverse, games, etc.

3D assets are being deployed everywhere: in e-commerce, marketing, product design, architecture, learning, education, professional training, and art. Pervasive 3D presents great opportunity to the content development community, because it represents a growing cross-industry marketplace for their skills but it also presents specific challenges. When products and assets are being deployed everywhere, they must work anywhere: on any operating system, any platform, and any device. In the e-commerce business model, the entire value chain can leverage 3D assets at scale if they can make them reusable and consistent.
This panel brings together experts from each part of the e-commerce value chain from retailer to content creator to 3D developer to tool provider to discuss how to build a scalable 3D production pipeline and the impact of 3D and XR on the e-commerce evolution. Panelists will share case studies and talk about how 3D and XR are changing consumer expectations from the moment of conception with product development and design, to pre-commerce, all the way through the entire pipeline to the post-purchase journey.
The panel will also explore what is possible by achieving the 3D-rich retail landscape through standardization of technology. Panelists will talk about their ongoing work with open standards to resolve longstanding challenges, how artists, developers, agents, retailers, and content creators can incorporate existing tools and guidelines into their workflows, and what can be gained from investment in XR. Panelists, all members of The Khronos Group's 3D Commerce Working Group, will discuss what the problems with creating, distributing and storing 3D and XR assets, what solutions exist today, why they are investing in 3D, and the vision for the future where 3D and AR content is leveraged for machine learning, production and more.
