Description

We present a 5G mixed reality remote maintenance demonstrator that supports hands-free remote assistance in industrial settings. The demonstrator provides mixed reality and virtual reality views for on-site and office workers linked via a shared digital space where they are represented as avatars around the digital twin of a machine. Working on actual machines in a real production line, our system uses the hierarchical CAD-data of those machines to provide for a realistic immersive environment. We focus on data-scarcity with cloud-services to protect intellectual property, while embracing the possibilities offered by new technology, such as remote rendering over wireless networks. The presented demonstrator exhibits several key characteristics of an industrial metaverse application as has been showcased on several occasions like the Open Day of the German Government in 2023.

No doubt all who attend this talk will relate to the moment when you mention XR (or even sometimes its sibling acronym, AR) to somebody outside ‘the’ bubble(s) and are met with an expression that is the equivalent of a never-ending loading spinner.

It’s easy to forget that the majority of the world is not nerding out, or even paying attention to, the extended reality world that is being pioneered by passionate practitioners like yourselves. This can create a disconnect when XR creators are producing experiences for exactly these people, which leads to two things happening: Firstly, there’s less XR advertising out there than there should be because a lot of people working for brands simply just don’t get it. Secondly, there is kicka*s XR advertising out there only being experienced by an underwhelming few.

Just like in all marketing, deep and genuine empathy for your audience is key to making impactful XR advertising experiences that capture attention.

This talk will reveal the things you need to know about helping people working for brands understand the magic that is XR advertising, and how empathy is the key to creating XR experiences that are genuinely meaningful for the audiences they are intended for.
