Education is on the cusp of a technology revolution that will transform teaching and learning to an experience-based approach. At Facebook, we are creating virtual reality hardware and immersive experiences to pioneer this movement. This talk will cover how VR is the next step in the natural evolution of computer-based instruction and how we are redefining the way we teach and learn by developing industry-leading content, virtual collaboration and creation tools. We believe that virtual reality has the power to transform education and turn classrooms into 21st-century technologically advanced places of learning. The technology and content will not only increase engagement and knowledge retention, it will also allow students to get equitable access to education regardless of distance and turn students into innovative creators. After all, our generation built the technology, but it's going to take the next generation to make it great!

2 different use cases running on the Insider Navigation platform:
1. Schiphol Airport: Maintenance without prior knowledge of the venue, managing in real-time assets gets faster, more accurate and efficient. Quality rate the assets and report defects. All this information is linked to any database system and work orders can be put in place quickly.
2. US Navy: big vessels are hard to navigate in. In case of an emergency certain items like pumps and the engine have to found immediately plus showing their values in real-time including offering manuals for solving issues.

With 200 million active users and over $20 billion expected market investments by 2020, Virtual Reality (VR) is inevitably making its way into the consumer market.
With the rise of technologies like VR, Augmented Reality (AR) and mixed Reality (MR), collectively known as XR, researchers are expressing concerns about the safety, privacy, ethics and security. Kavya Pearlman, Co-founder of the XR Safety Initiative is working with such researchers to stay ahead of the bad actors, and help establish security and safety standards for XR technologies. XRSI is conducting research, spreading awareness and building information security and policy framework to address concerning in emerging technologies such as XR.
The Talk will walk the audience thru the following:
-What are the potential threats in XR
-Why should we care about XR Safety
-Who all should be concerns
Additionally Pearlman would share high level overview of some recently discovered "novel" cyber attacks in various VR apps and platforms, to demonstrate how XR technologies are absolutely susceptible to hacking and manipulation.
Finally the closing of the talk with -How can any XR stakeholder get involved and make a positive impact via XRSI.
10:00 AM - 10:30 AM
New Equipment Digest recently featured a young manufacturing worker wearing a RealWear HMT-1 headset on its cover posing the question: “Is this manufacturing’s iPhone moment?” RealWear’s HMT-1 was called the “crowning achievement.” But why? This essential AWE keynote by RealWear’s Co-Founder, President and Chief Product Officer Sanjay Jhawar cuts through the noise and lays out how RealWear has emerged as the unexpected speaker of truth for augmented reality in the harshest environments. Two years later from its inception, RealWear is now the most deployed industrial wearable device globally. In this talk, Jhawar will reveal how customers have crossed the chasm enabling thousands of enterprise companies to break free from “pilot purgatory” to achieve successful global deployment, empowering all workers to increase productivity and safety. Jhawar will go deeper than ever sharing new case studies in oil and gas, utilities, automotive, and manufacturing industries to move the industry forward together.

Not only does it take great hardware and apps to bridge our digital and physical worlds, but also endurance to survive as the market matures.
04:00 PM - 04:30 PM
In March, Kevin wrote an eye-opening cover story for Wired about Mirrorworlds, the digital twin of the real world. This is an old idea, but now companies like Google, Snap, Niantic, and startups like 6D.ai, are building parts of the Mirrorworlds. They use tech like SLAM - geolocation + computer vision - which enables us to precisely anchor the digital to the physical. The real world will thus become searchable and clickable making Mirrorworld the most valuable asset in spatial computing.

The way we’ve been telling stories in the last couple of centuries hasn’t changed much. The narratives are driven by conflict and that conflict is often very polarized. They tend to be driven by a sense of rightness, making them linear and foreseeable. If you defeat the bad guy the story is over. But the system that produced the bad guy persists, and is not really addressed. In a linear story, there is only a "before and after" the conflict is solved. In collective storytelling, there are different options to solve a conflict, based on a wider range of views, needs and experiences.
When it comes to our futures, we experience hope, we feel fear, but we sometimes forget that we also have influence. We can choose the future we want to work towards. Stories can open up new worlds and inspire people to be more engaged. But can we go a step further? Can we move from XR for good to XR for change? Can people’s behavior be nudged as a result of storytelling? So they stand up to crime, reactionary policies, or natural disaster?

Recently we’ve been hearing a lot of buzz around developments, prospects and also failures in AR and MR. The real questions that need to be addressed are how these successes are measured, what are the reasons for failure and who is taking into account what the user really wants and needs?
So, what’s next? A new chapter in human-machine-interaction. We are moving from a nearly imperceptible interface to an interface you actually won’t be conscious about. We are going beyond interface interaction.
The big question with interfaces is: You are offered nearly unlimited data to augment your reality or to mix with your reality, but how do you let the machine know which data you want? When you are offered choices, how do you select one? From the early joy stick, we’ve come to state-of-the-art data selection such as the blinking eye.
But what’s the next method of data selection? How will we make choices in the future? We will give you the answers at AWE 2019.
