Description

Historically, the browser has been overlooked as a platform for building and releasing virtual and augmented reality content. With the arrival of the WebXR standard into browsers this year, efforts around web monetization, and a growing need for virtual collaboration tools, XR content on the web has never been more compelling and there's never been a better time to build. In this talk, Robin will discuss how using web technologies and frameworks can expand the capabilities of XR applications, reach a wider audience with immersive content, and mobilize a greater pool of developers to build out innovative new tools and applications within the XR space.
This session will be hosted in Hubs, which can be accessed from a browser on standalone VR devices, computers, or mobile phones. To join, click here closer to the event: https://hubs.mozilla.com/pGdWEYo/hubs-at-awe-online

Description

The web straddles national boundaries. It is the place where the "great conversation" takes place; the conversation about how we as world citizens work and grow together. But it is hard today to even tip somebody a dollar across international boundaries for work that you like. It is also hard to see what the best content is - based on how much attention a given person has gotten in real-world terms other than by upvotes which can be faked. In this new world, a world that is increasingly online, using a web that is increasingly more vibrant, richer and engaging, we need ways to signal to each other clearly - with true signals - that cannot be forged, that show real indications of interest. What we think of as the future web is more than just pretty graphics - it is an intersection of three key requirements: 1) better tools 2) identity and 3) money. For us to have the beautiful hyper futures we imagine; with immersive 3d graphics, where content creators who want to make money go to the web first rather than walled gardens - we need to fix all three of these.

AR promises to make all the world – including work – a stage for immersive experiences. And with the arrival of COVID-19, a massive accelerant for AR to catalyze “jobs of the now” awaits. And after the virus, the role of “AR Journey Builder” may be one of the hottest jobs of 2025. But sometimes today, it can feel like the world is divided into “believers” and “non-believers”. So which view is the right view? What’s on the horizon? What’s the real reality of augmented reality, and how will it affect the future of work? We partnered with Oxford Economics and Berkeley’s Haas School of Business to capture lessons learned from industry practitioners. In short, AR is happening fast, it’s happening now, and timing is everything.

12:30-1:00pm PDT: Introduction to the AWE Immersive Arts Symposium, Presented in the Museum of Other Realities with Kaleidoscope;
1:00-2:00pm PDT: The Once and Future Artistic Legacies of Virtual Realties;
2:30-3:30pm PDT: VR Sculpting Best Practices Panel;
4:00-5:00pm PDT: How to Fund your XR project with Kaleidoscope

To check these out, read the below, these instructions (https://www.notion.so/A-Guide-to-Attending-Events-in-the-MOR-2410f5de72054b339531fa4d15ec36d5), and enter 'awe1' for the code.

To access The AWE Immersive Arts Symposium, download the Museum of Other Realities app on Oculus, Steam, or Viveport for $19.99. Once inside, enter the room name (5/26: awe1, 5/27: awe2, 5/28: awe3) either on the flatscreen monitor or in VR. On the flatscreen, click the hamburger menu to bring up the interface (if it isn't visible already).

Enter the given room name in the "Online Room" field and hit the "Connect" button. You might have to disconnect and reconnect for it to work. The interface mostly matches the flatscreen version, so you can follow the instructions above to connect to the room name. Once that's done, you should be in the same room with other attendees and presenters!

COVID 19 has exposed the lack of investment in frontline worker technology making manufacturing and service companies struggle to maintain operational readiness in the face of social distancing, travel restrictions, and an uncertain workforce. AI-based Connected Worker platforms provide the capabilities to address these challenges while providing the foundation for long term digital transformation of manufacturing and service workers. Listen to serial entrepreneur (ThingWorx, Lighthammer, Wonderware) Russ Fadel describe his vision for the future connected worker.

Brands are looking for novel and innovative ways to mesh augmented reality with their CX strategies. Sometimes, the most atypical brand can be amongst the best teachers for how to bring technologies together.
Working on behalf of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Digitas created JFK MOONSHOT--a fully-synchronized augmented reality recreation of Apollo 11 where every moment, maneuver, and milestone unfolded in real time, second-by-second, precisely 50 years later.
Keith Soljacich, VP/Group Director of Experiential Technology, at Digitas, will discuss how his team conceptualized this one-of-a-kind program, as well as how it has proven to be a testing ground for how brands from all industries can harness this type of technology for consumers’ benefit—and for brands’ revenues.

User flows for mixed reality are difficult to review effectively using traditional 2D tools like presentations and animated mockups. Instead of creating 2D storyboards, you can build prototypes straight in VR.
During the talk, we can review production workflows of companies like Walmart, Unity Technologies and Cartoon Network. Spatial apps need spatial tools. You get speed, effectiveness and feeling of the scale inside the VR. In XR there is a HUGE demand to quickly prototype ideas and have a very iterative process and an efficient workflow. We want to see more apps that feel like born in VR and not like a PC/web kind of app inside the VR, same true for AR with all limitations you have to count on usability, comfort of menu navigation and more.
Too much development is happening on guessing without a vivid immersive prototype, which can be approved by stakeholders, the cost of development, especially when it comes to XR, is very high. How can we easily and quickly create prototypes and see the whole simulation in a headset/in a device to decide whether to commit the budget and move forward? With VR prototyping and animation software tools like Tvori or Microsoft Marquette, you can quickly create 3D UI and with Tvori you can animate your users workflow. Within just hours and days instead of months, you get a full simulation of the experience, in a headset, before you actually start coding.
Think of a VR game development in Unity. It is extremely hard to get a feeling of scale if you are not prototyping inside VR. You will have to keep putting ON and OFF the headset and probably not getting the proper scale.
Spatial apps need spatial creation tools.

When it comes to design, visualizing the future means conceptualizing ideas that aren’t yet fully defined. Designing for AI requires a rethinking of how it is authored, trained, and managed. It’s largely uncharted territory and the necessity for invention is great.

Becoming fluent in this space challenges many designer norms: trading ‘in lorem ipsum’ for deeper entanglement with data; inventing by abstracting analogous conventions when there are no defined patterns to pull from. And even more interesting, tackling AI in the aspect of its role, expression, transparency and infallibility. It's a dramatic shift from pixel pusher to orchestrator. Hear seasoned designer, strategist, and innovator Matthew Santone's insights on tackling AI, the ethical challenges involved, and how designers can help steer the future.
