The Girl Scouts and The Virtual Wild launched an AR walking trail app call "GeoQuest." It's focused around the STEM Center of Excellence at Camp Whispering Cedars in Dallas, TX. Using Bluetooth beacons, GeoQuest is a location-based app that makes it fun for Scouts to learn about the camp's unique history of buried dinosaur fossils that have been found near an ancient geology trail. Users are led down a walking path and get to dig up digital and real 3D-printed fossils. The app aims to merge a creative digital story with real life and then exposes many STEM careers that went into building the experience.
This relationship between the Girl Scouts or Northeast Texas and The Virtual Wild started with this bespoke project. Now, it has blossomed into a multi-year strategic plan aimed at creating a wide range of innovative projects that will support the Scouts' needs in areas of recruitment, education, transition into the professional workforce, and alumni support. The experience of working together is a great example of how a Non-Profit and a For-Profit organization can thrive together. Ashley Crowe, GSNETX's Chief Program Officer, and Jay Rutherford will lead this joint presentation by offering insight and discussing strategic details from their own perspectives.

Whereas consumer virtual reality (VR) systems can support scenarios that are quite visually and aurally realistic, most of todayâs VR hardware is lacking when it comes to physical touch. This can be especially problematic for cases where the goal is to train users for the use of real-world physical equipment. Although not widely implemented, enhancing existing VR systems with physical props and other physical cues can enable users to feel what they see, resulting in better training transfer to the real world. This talk will explore where such physicality is important and present some example props and use cases. Attendees will leave the talk with ideas of why and how they might incorporate physicality into their XR simulations.

The Virtual Reality (VR) market could surpass $ 40 Billion by 2020. The U.S. Military recently closed a deal worth $ 480 Million for the Microsoft HoloLens Mixed Reality (MR) device. Oculus has already released the first immersive VR system that is mobile with no wires and no need for a high-end gaming PC for $399. While these are exciting times, an important question needs to be investigated: Are we ensuring the security and privacy of these systems? In this talk I will present various experiments and findings we conducted in our lab related to the security and forensics of consumer grade immersive VR systems. I will show you how we are able to move people in physical spaces without their knowledge or consent, as well as other attacks that we coined and implemented related to immersive VR. Furthermore, we will also explore the forensic artifacts these systems produce.

3D creativity has been viewed by creatives as both exciting and daunting. While we’ve all been blown away by the intricate fantasy worlds that game developers build, and the immersive 3D visual effects in movies, many of us thought creating in 3D was too technically demanding. Our imaginations have run wild with the possibilities – yet we couldn’t imagine using it ourselves.
The pandemic has changed that. When we couldn’t get together for photo shoots and other creative projects, companies turned to 3D to create. Fashion brands used 3D to speed their design processes. Lowe’s used it to digitize their entire catalog for virtual shopping. And 3D virtual photography was the foundation for a Ben & Jerry’s marketing campaign.
What does this mean for creatives moving forward? New technologies and workflows are driving seamless and intuitive creation with end-to-end software integration, as many of our future experiences will likely come through a 3D, immersive interface. In this session, Sebastien Deguy, Vice President of 3D & Immersive at Adobe, will discuss how 3D goes beyond marketing campaigns and into creating entire immersive worlds in virtual or augmented reality that are purely the product of a creative person’s imagination.

If you want to see where the widespread adoption of holograms is headed, look no further than location based entertainment (LBE). Agencies and creatives have discovered the power of anchoring holograms to specific locations which users can interact with either through phones, tablets, head mounted displays or touch screens. These don't have to be difficult to set up either - whether using Scan QR codes or spatial anchors, Steve Sullivan, (General Manager, Microsoft) and Christina Heller, (CEO, Metastage ) will discuss how clients and creators can elevate experiences outside the home and on location. They'll walk through a number of highly successful use cases from partners like Verizon, RYOT, Nexus, Jackson Family Wines and more.

For the 2021 edition of the annual AWE rooom AG created a 3D virtual experience depicting the four main areas of the event: Main Stage, Tracks, Playground and Auggie Awards. At the Main Stage, live streams of the keynotes can be viewed via a large screen. The Tracks area provides visitors with links to the different presentation agendas sorted by industry field. For the Playground stage, rooom Ag implemented “silver surfer” statues for visitors to interact with. A click on the statues links to the websites of the Playground participants. A special teleport feature allows user to easily switch between the different Playgrounds. Another highlight is the Auggie Award stage. Here, attendees can view the embedded video of all finalists, take a look at the award categories, or experience a 3D model of the award via AR. A live stream of the award ceremony will be presented here as well.
In addition, rooom added various information points for the audience to explore. A centrally placed virtual globe gives visitors information about all regional AWE NITES around the world. Annotations link to the respective event. Highlighted sponsor points for bronze, silver, gold, and titanium sponsors collect all information and links about the sponsoring organizations.
The virtual AWE venue grants easy access to all core areas right in the browser. Visitors can navigate the show floor via live avatars.

One of the key challenges for augmented reality is the development of ultra-compact, lightweight, low-power near-to-eye display solutions with good image quality. Laser Beam Scanning (LBS) technologies can meet these key requirements and deliver form-factors that enable light weight, fashionable, all-day wearable AR smart glasses with the ability to scale resolution and field-of-view (FoV) with low power consumption.
In this session, we will briefly highlight the key technologies and solutions behind LBS that enable AR smart glasses, as well as more complex mixed reality HMD devices, including MEMS Micromirror scanners systems, laser diode modules, waveguides and LBS systems design considerations. Finally, we will briefly touch upon the ecosystem that supports end product manufacturers with key technologies and devices.
