The Metaverse is largely bullshit, as defined. Proponents claim our real lives (IRL) will be inundated with digital worlds, virtual stuff everywhere we look. AR and VR certainly share many technologies and source data. One might expect the experiences to be the same. This talk will explain why the Metaverse hipsters are wrong, revealing a brighter recipe for our future.

Technologies such as AR and VR can provide great benefits in the world of biopharma to improve the efficiency and collaboration of scientists working in lab and manufacturing environments. This session will describe current and future use cases of the technology, in addition to challenges that were overcame to enable its use. The timeline from initiating a pilot program, obtaining senior leadership buy-in, overcoming logistical challenges during COVID-19, and expanded use throughout multiple company sites will discussed.

Today’s AR displays provide an incomplete illusion of 3D content which leads to visual conflicts with the real world and confusion of our vision. The 3D illusion is only stereoscopic created by two flat images without natural focal depth. This absence of natural depth cues threatens the acceptance of consumer AR due to the unnatural, unpleasant, and unhealthy visual experience. We will explain the adverse effects of visually incorrect AR images and present the solution to this problem with light-field display that is an efficient and simple way of generating optically correct high-resolution real-world-like imagery suitable for both AR and VR devices.

While retail sales across the board have hit new lows, companies that have been able to pivot and provide superior experiences by harnessing the latest advancements in technologies like AR – are finding new, innovative ways to increase customer engagement and drive sales. Bollé was one such brand that quickly recognized trying on products virtually had a renewed appeal and saw the value in AR as a way to provide incredibly rich and realistic experiences.
Partnering with M7 Innovations and QReal, Bollé launched multiple ‘Try-On/Try-Out’ AR campaigns via Instagram in 2020 (one in June and one in October) and 2021 (one in May and one in September [link to come soon]). What people loved is that they could not only see how the glasses looked on, but also how the lens technology worked - the industry’s first ‘Try-Out’ AR experience. Paired with 3D models on their website that garnered an impressively high average dwell time of nearly 19 seconds, Bollé proved they can progress past the ‘fun’ of AR and make something functional for their customers in their e-commerce journey.
As an additional proof-point, Bollé retail partner Dick’s Sporting Goods saw January 2021 sales of Bollé products up 456% YOY (all digital), which is impressive as there wasn’t even a pandemic to contend with in January 2020. The key differentiator was the AR lens experience that was created, the Google Swirl ad unit that drove traffic to the Dick’s page, and a little paid media to support these two things.

Explore Haiti in VR! The new experiential app is modeled off one of Hope for Haiti's partner schools in rural Haiti. Users can explore the three room school, interact with different elements such as a well, chalkboard, flag pole, etc. and connect with one another through customized avatars. The space is designed to not only provide an engaging and hands-on experience, but also to give users an alternative (and more positive) perception of Haiti.
To download the Haiti VR app on Sidequest (https://sidequestvr.com), type "Hope for Haiti" in the search bar, or download the APK from the link below and side-load it to your Oculus headset using Sidequest. If you have never side-loaded an application to your headset before, see the article for detailed instructions.

With the Metaverse we’re moving from an Internet we look at to a spatial Internet that surrounds us. Companies approaching this new reality face incredible challenges: how can we design experiences that are user centric in a three dimensional space? How can we adapt successful formula from the 2D world without losing the added benefits from immersive worlds?
How can team work and share their early vision with clients or leadership?
One of the reasons why most of today’s XR UIs feel and look like pure 2D is very similar to the early days of the Internet. Right now XR is at a stage where the web was three decades ago: unespiring, complicated to get in and overall “risky”. The tools used nowadays to ideate and design this new metaverse were not made for this purpose, slowing down the adoption of this new media: companies are struggling to pitch their strategy and vision, teams are not getting funded and blockbuster games are very rare .
We do believe that within 2-3 years, metaverse will evolve in shape and form from what we have right now and we need fast, accessible and collaborative tools to ideate, communicate and iterate.

As we know, there has been a lot of recent chatter, while many may even call it “hype”, over the concept of the ‘Metaverse’.
As with most emerging technologies, the biggest challenge is navigating through all this hype, filtering through the rogue companies and individuals that may seek to exploit others in the early stages, and identifying viable business models that could appropriately be built upon these technologies and become sustainable.
Join us as we curated a group of technologists and entrepreneurs who have discovered early success with investors, earnings, and both community and public support in their companies that will hopefully serve as foundational models that will further contribute to the advancement of the Metaverse.

Aerospace manufacturing and maintenance, in even the most modern contexts, is dependent upon the successful execution of often complex and technically challenging processes by talented and properly trained technicians. Traditionally, learning these skills has required extensive classroom, lab, and on-the-job training based on static presentations and reference manuals. Once developed, deployment of these skills on the assembly line or in the maintenance hangar has further relied on “rectangular” reference information to provide guidance as to locations, dimensions, or process sequences critical to achieving quality results. What could a new approach using XR-based, contextually aware, and interactive presentations of technical information, in-situ, contribute to support initial learning and development for new employees, recurrent and differences training, and to provide “heads-up” guidance of the technician as to process flow and critical reminders? How might additional information fed from integrated IoT-enabled hand tools to this presentation provide further knowledge to the technician, enabling greater autonomy, decision making, and higher quality outcomes at lower cost? And, how could aggregation of this data into modern QMS and ERP systems efficiently record as-built quality data and unlock opportunities for process optimization? As aerospace manufacturing and maintenance endeavors to become more agile and the industry solves the simultaneous challenges of generational change and building the scale the workforce necessary to enable new markets like Advanced Aerial Mobility (AAM), we believe that XR and IoT have much to offer the industry, and particularly the talent, of tomorrow.
